“Winter Marsh is a breakthrough painting for me. After a year or so of trying to regain some of the skill I had learned from my years of study at duCret School of Art and William Paterson College, I arrived at an interesting place where I was able to let go a bit and be less concerned with rendering and more so with creating a mood. This painting was pivotal in what would be a year of exploration to come. The subject matter is based on the area around the neighborhood in which I live in Gloucester County, New Jersey. Located with in walking distance of the Delaware River, there are many marshes, creeks, and tributaries that are a delight to see on my daily walks. You can see the beginnings of my work utilizing broken color, emphasized brush strokes, and even some palette knife work.” – Louis Ciavolella
